Using Calibre to Convert Kindle Books for Other Devices
November 13, 2014
Don't own a Kindle? You can still read the ebooks you buy on Amazon. Most devices use easy-to-download Kindle reading apps. They are free, and available for almost everything: PCs, smart phones, iPads and more.
But what if you want to read your books on another reading device, like my Sony Reader? I had heard about free conversion software, and Calibre seemed highly respected. Would it be complicated to use? I decided to find out.
I'm happy to report it was easy. (The only glitch: my Sony Reader was set to automatically turn on the Reader for PC software it had previously installed on my computer, and I had to make it stop doing that. Fortunately, Calibre's Help button pointed me in exactly the right direction. Problem solved!)
I've put together a PDF tutorial to show you the steps I took. (If you want to print it out, or if the screen version is too fuzzy, use this version.)
Some publishers use digital rights management to help protect their books against piracy. Because d'Élan Publishing titles are only available through Amazon, we want to make it as easy as possible for all readers to access our ebooks. All of our titles are DRM-free.
Reader experience is important to us, so as always: let us know if you run into a problem with one of our books, or with the "how to" we've provided.
